Winter Balance

Drinking water in winter is more important than in summer

Many people think that in winter the body doesn’t need as much water as in the heat. But in fact, dehydration happens even more often during cold seasons — we just don’t notice it. As a result, we feel tired, our skin dries out, immunity weakens, and overall health declines.

1. Heating dries the air and your mucous membranes

Heaters and radiators literally pull moisture out of the air. Because of this, the mucous membranes in the nose and throat dry up, making it easier for viruses and bacteria to attack the body. Children suffer the most, but adults also experience dryness and irritation.

What to do:
Drink enough pure water and keep your home air humidified. This helps your body fight off infections naturally.

2. “Warm” drinks deceive your thirst

In winter, we prefer sweet tea, coffee, or alcohol to keep warm. But such drinks don’t hydrate — they actually dehydrate the body. We lose water without realizing it.

What to do:
Drink warm water. You can add lemon, honey, or ginger — it will taste better and support your immune system.

3. Temperature changes stress the body

It’s freezing outside and hot indoors — the body constantly adjusts, spending energy and moisture to balance the temperature. Skin and mucous membranes are the first to suffer.

What to do:
Drink a glass of warm water or unsweetened herbal tea before going outside and when you come back. Carry a thermos with warm water — it will help you stay hydrated and comfortable.

4. Cold weather increases appetite

During winter, we crave heavier, high-calorie meals. The body asks for “fuel” to stay warm, but as a result, we gain extra weight.

What to do:
Drink water 1–1.5 hours after eating — it helps remove toxins and boosts metabolism. If you replace sugary drinks with water, you can cut about 400 calories a day — that’s nearly half a kilogram in just 9 days!

Conclusion: Drinking enough water in winter is essential for health, energy, and immunity.
